The last time I had to restore off a TM backup (admittedly years go) it didn't give me much information as it was restoring, and even less if the restore failed. As others have said, it works fine on 2011 MBPs and you might just have a wonky install. I'd actually suggest reinstalling Sierra. I had some issues doing a TM restore a long time ago, but it took a while. I have my 2011 MacBook Air connected to an external drive for media streaming. I purchased an early 2011 13' Macbook Pro a three years and the machine hasn't been at top speed from the beginning (I suspect the dealer sold me a refurbished laptop) but as of recently it's downright unusable. With the release of the latest 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros, Apple has merged the best of the past and future to create a new line of MacBooks that are worthy of the Pro monicker. I just like copying the files over manually and knowing what's going on.

Apple should offer higher resolution and matte displays, especially for professional creatives. That might not sound like a whole lot of a difference, but it does make the MacBook Pro’s display feel a little more crowded than the MacBook Air’s. I haven't used Time Machine in a long time, but my recommendation is to make a USB backup of your critical data. The 13 MacBook Air has a high-resolution display, ringing in at 1440 x 900 pixels.
